2009 World Seafood Congress to be held in Morocco
The IAFI World Seafood Congress 2009 is to be hosted by Morocco, as the Congress
takes on a spicy international flavour.
Jayne Gallagher, President of IAFI, is excited about the expectations of the 8th
Congress. “I am very pleased to announce that the next IAFI World Seafood
Congress will be held in Agadir, Morocco,” she said. “This will be the first time the
biennial event has been held in the African Continent and I would especially like to
thank our hosts Morocco and our co-organisers FAO and UNIDO for creating this
opportunity.”
The theme for the Congress, which will be held 3-7th October 2009, will be ‘Toward
building trust in international seafood trade and market access’. “One of the
important agreements on the Congress is that there will be translations of the
presentations into Spanish and French as we acknowledge the need to ensure that
the local seafood industry and other participants need to be able to access
information and network with the international specialists that will be at the
Congress,” Ms Gallagher advised. “The Congress will ensure that Morocco is the
focus for seafood for a few weeks as the Congress will follow on from the 30th
session of the Codex Committee on Fish and Fishery products (28 Sept – 2 Oct
2009).”
“Additionally we have spoken with the Director of the Fisheries Industries and the
President of the Federation Nationale des Industries de la Pêche (FENIP) to ensure
they are kept informed of and take advantage of the prospects for promotional
activities”, Ms Gallagher continued. “Planning has commenced and we will soon have
a dedicated website for the Congress in addition to our usual webpage, www.iafi.net, to support communications
between seafood professionals throughout the world.”
“Having spoken to many of our members I know that there is a strong interest in
Morocco and people are keen to build on the work and discussions that took place in
Dublin, 2007 so we look forward to making this Congress a success. As usual there
will be a range of diverse workshops and activities enveloping the Congress to
ensure that we create a compelling reason to attend,” Ms Gallagher concluded.
