Vance   Vance McEachern’s first career started at the early age of 16 as a commercial fisherman on Canada’s Atlantic coast fishing herring and continued on the Pacific coast working on herring and salmon seiners.  In 1981, he joined the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) as a Fish Inspector in Prince Rupert, British Columbia.


During his career with DFO and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Vance played a pivotal role in the introduction and application of HACCP in Canada’s food inspection system.  Vance led the development and implementation of DFO’s Quality Management Program, one of the first mandatory government HACCP systems in the world.  In the initial years of the CFIA he managed the development of the Integrated Inspection System, the precursor to Canada’s Modernized Inspection System. Over his time with CFIA, Vance held positions as the Executive Director of the Inspection Modernization Office , the Executive Director of Operational Strategies and Delivery and the Regional Director, Inspection Operations, British Columbia Coastal.


Vance holds a BSc in Marine Biology from the University of British Columbia and a MSc in Food Safety Management and Inspection from the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside, UK.


On July 30, 2013, Vance retired from the Canadian Public Service after a successful career of 32.5 years with DFO and CFIA. Vance is now looking at pursuing a career in the private sector and contributing to the further evolution and development of food inspection management and systems.
