Peter Howgate on board the Torry research trawler, the GA Reay, 1981
The award was launched last year in honour of Peter Howgate who, for 35 years worked at the Torry Research Station, Aberdeen, a UK government institute specialising in research and development in fish processing and handling. Peter has made a massive and ongoing contribution to our understanding of fish technology, particularly in the field of sensory evaluation of fish quality, and he continues to contribute widely, including frequent, erudite and immensely well researched contributions to the HACCP discussion list at Seafood@UCDavis.edu.

Clara Bah, 2011 Winner of the Peter Howgate Award
The 2011 winner of the Award was Ms. Clara Bah, a researcher at the Department of Food Science, University of Otago in New Zealand.
The prize of EUR500 helped Clara to attend the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology (NZIFST) conference in Rotorua, New Zealand at the end of June 2011, at which she presented her MSc research findings on the bioactivity of fish roes from five commercial New Zealand fish species. She hopes her paper will help to publicise how the extraction of useful bioactive compounds from parts of fish which are often discarded can help to improve the commercial value of fishery products.
We look forward to hearing from you. Good Luck !
